Prof. dr. Peul completed his medical degree at Erasmus University in Rotterdam and completed his neurosurgeon training at Haaglanden Medisch Centrum in The Hague and LUMC in Leiden. He specialised in spinal, skull base and vascular surgery. He's a Msc. in epidemiology at EMGO, Amsterdam University. With completing this master cum laude he aims to prove efficiency of neurosurgical treatments. In 2010 he was assigned professor. His inaugural lecture in 2010 "Spiegel der Rational Zorg, From carpenter's eye to computer-navigated neurosurgery" therefore provides a picture of innovation, evaluation and efficiency of care with outcome measurements on the entire spectrum of disorders with neurosurgical care demand treated in the greater Leiden region.
Professor Peul is head of the Neurosurgery deparment at LUMC in Leiden, he's chairman of the UNCH and the founder and head researcher of the Spine Intervention and Prognostic Study (SIPS) Group in LUMC. On behalf of the European Association for Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), Professor Peul has been active in the UEMS Neurosurgery located in Brussels since 2015, where he is developing a European Training Curriculum for spinal surgery together with the Orthopedics and Neurosurgery divisions. In 2021, he became Editor-in-chief of the newly initiated scientific journal ‘Brain and Spine’. Due to his role as a clinical researcher, outside the LUMC he was appointed as a board member of ZonMW in 2020, for a period of 3 years.
